If you would be interested please contact Anne Heading.

Members of Deanery Synod must be baptised and communicant members of the Church of England.

Steve Blake

Steve Blake, born 5th January 1970, died 14th February 2026 Steve was born in Hong Kong but returned with his family to Great Ayton when he was four. He attended Stokesley Comprehensive School and married Rachel Frew from Kirkby in St. Augustine's Church in 1997, where their children, Charlotte and Daniel, were baptised. Steve originally worked for British Steel and, after relocating to South Wales, for its various reincarnations. Steve never forsook his north-east roots, visiting often his mother in Stokesley and his sister and her family in Yarm. As his father before him and his son now, he remained a Sunderland football team supporter - not always a comfortable allegiance! Steve was a fan of, and an authority on, real ale in England as well as in America and on the continent. He was generous in sharing his insights!

FRANCES CLAIRE TAYLOR

The Taylor family, Geoff, Jean, Tim and Luke thank you most warmly for all the phone calls, cards, letters, flowers, condolences and good wishes we received following the death of our dear daughter Frances.

The sheer volume of tributes has been overwhelming and we feel grateful to have so many good friends and neighbours. We are very lucky to live in such a caring community.

We are happy to advise that the donations to the charity Crohn's and Colitis amounted to more than £1,000.

Later this year the family will be organising fundraising events in Fran’s name.

In Memory of Stewart Williamson

Ann, Clare and Richard Williamson would like to thank everyone in and outside our villages for their letters, support, flowers and messages. It has been overwhelming and we are trying to respond to as many as possible.

We are most grateful. Thank you

Please follow our churchyard etiquette

f you have a loved one buried in our church yard please could you ensure the grave is tidy and the Christmas wreaths have been removed to help with grass cutting.

Generous Giving

The church team continues to be most grateful to people giving time, effort & money to help maintain our village church. We do not receive income from the state or from the Church of England, & increased essential operating costs, not least through inflation, now exceed income, last year by about £40 each month. We have decided to run a Generous Giving campaign, starting in July, in the hope that we can increase our resources & ensure that our church life & work can continue for the benefit of all who live in our two villages. More news next month!

Help needed to run the Church Hall

Could anyone, maybe recently retired, like to offer a few hours to the community by joining the small team who administer and run Kirkby Church Hall?

The Hall is an acknowledged asset to the village but needs another person to lend a hand opening and closing the hall for intermittent bookings, keeping an eye on tradesmen, maintenance jobs etc and ensuring everything is kept to a high standard for the many regular users each week.

Contact Anna 712797, Sheila 712321

Those of you who have been in the hall over the past month will have noticed that the main hall floor has been cleaned and resealed. We would like to thank Andy from DriNOW for the excellent finish he has given to the floor. We ask that people using the hall respect the floor and do not drag chairs or equipment over it. There is a trolly for moving the chairs in the store cupboard

Many thanks to all who attended the Soup Lunch, 16th May, during Christian Aid Week

. We had lots attending & the delicious home made soups received a lot of compliments.

We raised £940.00 with some money still to come in.

This was a remarkable amount to have raised & a testament to the generosity of our supporters in the villages.

This year the money will help fund tools & training for families to learn how to farm food wherever they live.

Thank you all for your continued support.

. Balance Bikes for our Early Years

Reception and Nursery had a fantastic time taking part in a balance bike session. The children were full of excitement as they developed their cycling skills in a fun & supportive determination and enthusiasm, with children encouraging one another celebrating each other’s successes.

A Visit from Chicks

The younger children at school enjoyed a wonderful surprise when a group of newborn chicks came to visit. The children were incredibly excited and showed great care and gentleness as they observed and handled them. It was an excellent addition to the children’s lifecycle work.

Walk or Wheel News

You may have noticed in the village that our children are now endeavouring to Walk or Wheel to School and some classes achieving 90%+ of children coming to school in this way – it is good for our health and the environment!

Shining Sport Stars Children

from Years 4 and 5 have been taking part in cluster cricket events over the past few weeks. They have really enjoyed developing new skills, working as a team, & showing great sportsmanship throughout. We are very proud of them.

In other sporting news, our Year 6 pupils are really enjoying their tennis lessons at the Sport’s Club.

SATs Praise

Well done to the oldest children in our school who worked really hard last week in their SAT tests. They wrote persuasive letters to our Head Teacher, for an end of SATs treat. Following their hard work, they enjoyed a fun-filled Friday, doing sports, getting creative with their buddies and watching a film with some treats in the afternoon – well done Year 6! We are proud of you all!

Other News

It is with mixed emotions that we share that Mrs Atkinson, our wonderful school cook, who has been part of Kirkby and Great Broughton School for 24 years, will be retiring in June! If you know anyone who would be interested in this role, please tell them to get in touch with the school.

Nursery Parents & their children Open Morning on Sat 4th July 11:00 – 12:00 to discover our nursery provision. Stay & play sessions can be booked 9:00-10:00 any Tues / Thurs in June or call us for a tour. We welcome children from 3 years old & we can provide wraparound care from 7:45am – 6:00pm.

Thank you for those people who are now volunteering in school & to those who have donated outdoor play items, we really appreciate it.

Y5/6 pupils have explored industry first-hand, through the Children Challenging Industry Project, in collaboration with York University. This project is a brilliant opportunity that brings real life science into the classroom and helps children see how STEM shapes the world around them.

We have been delighted to welcome Mrs Millar, who has worked with the children throughout the project. She introduced the children to a range of hands- on investigations linked to plastics and materials, encouraging them to think like scientists. One of the children’s favourite activities was “buying” different types of wrapping to protect an egg, which Mrs Millar then posted! Our postie thought this was brilliant as he returned the eggs although sadly some of them had 'apology ' labels from Royal Mail :) There was a lot of ‘eggcitement’ as they opened the parcels to see which eggs had survived. Our topic culminated with a visit to Alpek an amazing chance to see industry in action and understand how science, engineering and teamwork come together in real workplaces. Two boys said that they loved the control room, another loved climbing the tower! This project has sparked curiosity, confidence and a real enthusiasm for STEM. A huge well done to all our Y5 and Y6 scientists.

Cooking Club has been a super recent opportunity for some of our younger pupils baking cakes and making pizzas – delicious!

A big shout out and congratulations to Antares, who won last term’s House Competition!

Each week, children earn pom-poms for their house through kindness, effort and hard work, and the house with the most at the end of term enjoys a special hot chocolate with the Headteacher. Well done to our pupils for their enthusiasm and teamwork throughout the term. They have been true stars.

Our special child-led service at St Augustine's Church before the holidays was a lovely way to end the term. One member of the congregation said: "It filled my heart with joy," which is exactly what Easter is about.

Our classrooms were full of Easter excitement as children took part in egg decorating. From superheroes and storybook characters to beautifully painted spring scenes, it was wonderful to see such a fantastic range of ideas. The children approached the challenge with enthusiasm and some fantastic inventive ideas.

In other news, we are thrilled that our school is 4th in the whole of North Yorkshire for Walk or Wheel to School participation! Years 1 and 2 are leading the way with brilliant enthusiasm, but Year 3 are catching up quickly. It’s wonderful so many children are choosing active, healthy and eco-friendly ways to travel each morning. Over 103 children gained their first badge! Amazing work!

We are still looking for items for our outdoor area, games, picnic blankets etc. and people to help with some gardening – do get in touch if you’re able to help in anyway. Thank you!

Organist Wanted!

We need a replacement Organist at St Augustine's, starting as soon as possible. There are two, occasionally three, morning services per month; adding in the special services at Christmas, etc., this totals about 38 per year The organ is a Copeman Hart two-manual instrument; it was installed in 1998 and is one of the best in the area. There is a considerable library of both organ and choral music. We understand that a pianist of Grade 4 standard would have the right level of technical competence to be able to transition effectively to the organ.

Please contact Anne Heading for further details

Our Eco Group Gains Bronze Award

St Augustine's is part of an initiative by the Church of England to Care for God's Earth called Eco Church. The aim is to engage Christians of all denominations with stewardship of God's creation, the earth we all share. At St Augustine's the green team have been working towards achieving the Bronze Standard through interaction with the local community especially the Primary School, increasing the biodiversity of the churchyard and encouraging involvement in green issues in the Benefice. Thanks to all who have supported us in any way as we achieved our Bronze Award on the 5th October. Many congratulations to the Eco Group on the Bronze Award!

The Churchyard

The Churchyard is a tranquil, peaceful and welcoming space for all who visit and we encourage the placing of floral tributes on individual graves in memory of those who are no longer with us. However, please do not use glass containers; biodegradable materials are preferable, where possible. Flowers (and their containers) should be removed when they are past their best and we are grateful to those who do this. We ensure that the grass is cut and trimmed regularly during the summer months and a small team puts a lot of effort to keep the whole area tidy and the paths clear of debris. We would only move containers if they obstruct grass cutting. Please could you ensure that any item that does not comply with these guidelines is removed. With many thanks. We are always happy to welcome volunteers to help us look after the Churchyard and keep it in good order for future generations in our parish.

Kirkby Church Hall

Is there anyone living in Kirkby or Great Broughton with a few hours to spare who would like to join the small (but very friendly) team of volunteers who run Kirkby Church Hall? This is a well appointed hall that is popular with our regular hirers and we are only able to keep the rental charges down because it is administered by volunteers. Duties would include occasional opening up or closing the hall for one-off hirers, being a key holder, helping with Christmas decorations etc. If are interested please contact Sheila (01642-71232

Kirkby Church Hall is available for hire. Contact Sheila 712321

(Church) Electoral Roll

There is occasional confusion between the Civil Parish and Church Parish. The Civil parishes of Kirkby and Great Broughton are quite separate and anyone on the national Electoral Register is entitled to vote in elections for the Civil parish, in which they reside, as well as County Council and General elections. The Church Parish of Kirkby, based on St Augustine's church, however, covers all the area of Kirkby and Great Broughton civil parishes. Anyone who is baptised and resident in that area and, subject to certain conditions, living outside the area may apply to be included on the church Electoral Roll, which entitles you to vote in annual meetings of the church.

The church Electoral Roll is renewed every 6 years and everyone who was on the previous roll must apply in the same way as those wishing to be included for the first time. Of course you can apply at any time during the currency of the Roll. This is the start of a new Electoral Roll 6 year period and you will find an Application Form enclosed with March News Letter. If you wish to be included in the Church Electoral Roll please complete the Form and leave or send it as stated at the foot of the form in the newsletter.

Many thanks to our Gift Aid Secretary, Angus Sanderson for all his work for our parish

Electoral Roll Enrollment Form

Please consider joining the Electoral Roll for our parish, it gives a stake in the local Christian community and supports the wellbeing of the parish church. A person enrolled in this way may vote in our church meeting and is eligible to take on certain responsibilites such as that of Churchwarden.  The criteria for joining the Roll and details of who to contact may be found in the Application Document (click on the link below.)

You are welcome to join us! Rev Dr Anne Heading, Vicar.
